Question

After sex I have a problem getting the foreskin of my penis to go back. I need to push it back manually. Is this normal?

Answer

Firstly get a check up with your doctor.

What you are describing sounds like a condition called phimosis.

This can happen if the opening in the foreskin is too narrow for the head of the penis to easily pass through or if the foreskin is partially attached to the head of the penis.

In uncircumcised males up to the age of 3 this is actually normal, but after that the foreskin should go back easily after being pulled back for washing or urination, or after sex or masturbation.

Sometimes the foreskin does not slide back easily because of irritation or infection of the skin of the foreskin itself or the head of the penis underneath.

This can be more likely in someone with a tight foreskin because that can make the necessary daily cleaning of the sweat and secretions that accumulate under the foreskin more difficult.

It is really important that you always make surethat the foreskin is completely pushed back to cover the head of the penis.

Not to do so can result in a condition known as paraphimosis, which can cause severe, painful swelling of the foreskin- or in extreme (and thankfully rare!) cases damage to the head of the penis itself.

In the meantime, gently easing your foreskin gently back into its place after sex will help prevent any injury or irritation.
