Question

I need to arrange a termination procedure. Do I have to give my Medicare details? How much does it cost? Do I need to have a parent with me - I am 16?

Answer

Finding out you are pregnant can be a stressful time. There are lots of things to think about when making your decision on whether or not to continue a pregnancy. Children By Choice has information on line to help you with this decision. http://www.childrenbychoice.org.au/

At 16 you are able to consent to your own medical treatment and do not necessarily need a parent with you. You can apply for your own Medicare card from age 15. http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au

Sometimes, however difficult it seems, telling your parents or another adult that you trust (aunty, teacher, sister) can give you the support you need.

To arrange the abortion you need to make an appointment with a private clinic near you. These are not hospitals as such, but the doctors are trained and have special skills in doing the procedure.

Generally the cost of a termination is about $250 with Medicare and $500 without Medicare. Check with the clinic you book with how much they charge, as each clinic is different and costs do change. To find out about your nearest clinic call the Healthline on 1300 65 88 86

It's a good idea to have a support person with you on the day, someone to talk to and drive you home. You may see a counsellor at the clinic, but you do not need to see a counsellor afterwards unless you want to.
