Question

I've heard of a pill that causes a woman to have a miscarriage if taken within the first month of pregnancy. Is this true? What is it called and where can I buy it?

Answer

The pills you are referring to are used for medical abortion. The pills can be used in women who are four to seven weeks pregnant and are used only under strict medical supervision. Pregnancy is always counted from the first day of the last menstrual period

There are three different types of medications that can be used in medical abortion. Mifepristone(RU486, or the abortion pill as it is commonly known)is not readily available in Australia.

Marie Stopes International Australia offers medical abortion at its clinics in Sydney. For more information call 1800 003 707

Currently, Marie Stopes International uses a combination of two drugs, Methotrexate and Misoprostol to induce abortion; a combination that has been used in Canada for the past 10 years.
