Question

I often feel more like sex during my period, is it safe to make love while I am having my period?

Answer

Many women through the ages have made love during their periods specifically to avoid pregnancy, (word of warning though - this may not always be effective!) this is very much a personal thing. Other women prefer not to at this time. Some cultures forbid lovemaking at this time for various reasons.

There is no scientific research that suggests that this is a time for concern when a man and a woman feel happy making love at the time of her period. If there is any possible risk of bloodborne viral infections such as HIV, Hepatitis Band C, it may be wise to consider using a barrier method of contraception eg male or female condom when having sex during the period to reduce the possible risk of infecting a sexual partner.

The Female Condom is available via the Internet. For more information call the Family Planning NSW Healthline nurses on 1300 658 886.
