Question

After ejaculation, blood came out of my boyfriend's penis. What can cause this and what should he do?

Answer

Passing blood through the penis at or around ejaculation is probably more common in sexually active men than we think, but it always comes as a bit of a shock to everyone concerned.

Any bleeding from the penis, either with urination or ejaculation should always be checked out by a doctor. This is because bleeding can often be the first sign of a more serious problem.

Having said that, often no clear cause for the bleeding is found, even after all the appropriate tests and examinations have been done by the doctor.

The most common cause is a little bleed from one of the blood vessels somewhere along the urethra (the passage through which urine and semen pass) but bleeding can also be caused by an infection, prostate problems or, very rarely, a tumour. It is impossible to diagnose exactly what might be causing your boyfriend's symptoms without actually examining him and organising some basic tests.

You should really encourage your boyfriend to visit his local doctor for advice.
