Question

I feel like I'm not having an orgasm when I have sex but at the same time I moan a lot. Could I be moaning from the the come-and-go pain that I feel? I also get short of breath after going on for a while. Do I just not know when I'm having an orgasm?

Answer

The answer to some of your question can be found on our website: http://www.fpnsw.org.au/sex-matters/faq/orgasm_20080212.html - this is a question & answer on orgasms and you will find part of the information you might need.

Women usually know when they have had an orgasm. An orgasm can range from quite gentle pleasant contractions of the vagina to extremely intense whole body contractions that are very pleasureable, (which might cause you to make a lot of noise and would be difficult to miss), to anything in between.

As for the shortness of breath - it sounds as if you are breathing fast and shallowly. Maybe you could try focussing on relaxing as much as possible while you are having sex especially in the beginning - try to do long slow breaths. Of course if you are getting persistant pain with sex, this is not going to be very relaxing.

Pain with sex can be from a number of causes. Sexually transmitted infections is one of them. Most of these are very simple to treat, but some of them can possibly make it difficult to get pregnant later if they are not treated, so it would be a good idea for you to see a doctor to check out there is nothing that might need treatment.

It may just be the way your uterus lies inside you - this is perfectly normal - our insides are arranged with slight individual variations, just like our faces are all different. Some women get some discomfort when the penis bumps against the uterus in some positions if their uterus curves towards their back (as we said - completely normal), and are fine if they or their partner moves so the angle of the penis going into the vagina is changed slightly.

However, we cannot diagnose over the phone or the web you so need to get a doctor to check it out by asking you questions and doing an examination to be sure.
