Question

I have noticed that I have a piece of skin just inside the opening of my vagina that is like a piece of string going across the opening, is this normal and will it get in the way during intercourse?

Answer

It sounds like it could be part of your hymen.

The hymen is a very thin piece of tissue that partially covers the entrance to the vagina in young girls. It is pushed aside and stretched by normal exercise, tampons and sexual play. It shouldn't get in the way of love making.

Take it gently the first time and include lots of loving before you try intercourse. This prepares your body for sex. You'll notice that your vagina makes a special fluid to make it easier for the penis to enter the vagina and that your vagina softens and relaxes for this purpose too.

If you do have any problems see a doctor that you trust to have a check up. Very occasionally women need a small operation to remove the hymen in order to make intercourse comfortable.
