Question

What's the story if some of my period blood comes out solid?

Answer

Thank you for your question. The solid part of your period blood is clots. This is very normal for a lot of women when they have their periods.

There are special anti-clotting chemicals that come from the lining of woman's uterus along with her period blood. These mostly dissolve the blood clots in the period blood. But if the blood is flowing especially fast at some times, there might be too much blood for these chemicals to keep up with, and so the blood clots. This might be because the woman generally bleeds quite heavily, or just at certain times during her bleed.

It isn't a problem unless the clots get bigger than a 50c piece, or you are having to change your tampon or pad every hour. In that case you should see your doctor or womens's health centre.
