Question

Can the vaginal ring fall out of my vagina at any time? If not, how does it stay in?

Answer

In the main studies of the vaginal ring, only 2.7% of women reported having the ring come out of their vagina unintentionally. The product information states that if the ring comes out accidentally - for instance when removing a tampon - it should be rinsed in cool to lukewarm water (not hot) and reinserted into the vagina straight away.

The ring is made of special flexible plastic impregnated with hormone. The plastic is soft enough to be easily compressed between two fingers for insertion, and to sit comfortably in the vagina without being felt by the wearer once it is in place. The ring sits high up against the back of the vaginal wall and there is no requirement for correct positioning. It is held in place by the muscles surrounding the vagina.
