Question

Can you get a vasectomy or a tubal sterilisation in the public hospitals?

Answer

Access to public hospitals for these operations varies from hospital to hospital. See your doctor for a referral to your closest hospital outpatient urology department.

Many of these less complex operations are now being performed by local doctors with special training in day procedure clinics in the community. Call Family Planning's Healthline for details of these services on 1300 65 88 86.

There may be some delay in arranging these operations and it's important to keep yourself protected while you wait. Have a look at our Fact Sheets for information on contraception: http://www.fpnsw.org.au/sex-matters/factsheets/
