Question

I have a history of heavy periods that last for 8 days. My doctor suggested a progestogen (Mirena) IUD. I do not need contraception so why would this be a suitable choice for me?

Answer

The progestogen-bearing IUD - the Mirena - was originally created to treat excessively heavy and/or long menstrual bleeding as well as for its contraceptive use.

The progestogen IUD (Mirena) can be a good choice for women like yourself, or for those who get heavy or long periods when they use a copper IUD.

Before you have an IUD inserted it is important to be sure you have no gynaecological problem causing the heavy bleeding. So your doctor will want to do a check up including making sure you have an up to date pap smear and may suggest further tests first.
