Question

I am three weeks late for my contraceptive injection (Depo Provera®/Depo Ralovera®) and I had sex last night. Do I need emergency contraception or would I still be covered by the injectable contraceptive?

Answer

Yes, you do need to use emergency contraception. The injectable contraceptive is advised to be given every 12 weeks but can be safely used up to 14 weeks from your last injection, but no more than that.

NB: It can also be up to 2 weeks early - see: http://www.fpnsw.org.au/sex-matters/faq/Depo6_20080430.html.

For information on the Emergency Pill see our Fact Sheet: http://www.fpnsw.org.au/sex-matters/factsheets/76.html.

Give us a ring on Healthline 1300 658 886 to dicuss how to restart your injections after you have taken the emergency pill if you would like to continue using it.
