Question

Our doctor has told both my mum and me that we would be best not to use the contraceptive injection (Depo Provera®/Depo Ralovera®) because of our ages – she is 49 and I am 17. What’s the story with this?

Answer

Family Planning organisations in Australia recommend that Depo should not be the first choice of contraception for women under 25 or over 35 due to the effect on bone density. If women in these age groups do use the contraceptive injection (Depo Provera®/Depo Ralovera®) then they need to have a yearly assessment of their osteoporosis risks by their doctor.
