Question

I’ve been using the contraceptive injection (Depo Provera®/Depo Ralovera®) for nine months. I’ve noticed that I’m dry during sex. Why do you think this is?

Answer

Some women who use the contraceptive injection find that their vaginas do become drier because the injection lowers the levels of oestrogen in the body. Using water based lubricant or a vaginal moisturiser can help with this. However, mention this at your check-up, as the dryness may be due to something else.

Relationship issues and how a woman is feeling at any particular time can also have a big effect on what happens to her lubrication during sex. For more information about libido see: http://www.fpnsw.org.au/sex-matters/faq/libido_20011211.html.

(Vaginal dryness may indicate lower levels of oestrogen that can also affect a woman's bone density, so you could have a chat with your doctor or Family Planning clinician about this too.)
