Question

I had a Diaphragm years ago and have just been refitted, as I can no longer take the pill. I used to use spermicide, which was really messy. Do I still need to use spermicide? If so where can I get it?

Answer

It's up to you whether you choose to use spermicide with your diaphragm. Some women feel more protected using it but there is very little evidence to suggest that it makes a diaphragm more effective at preventing a pregnancy. It is more important that you use your diaphragm every time you have sex and that you always check that your cervix is covered. Currently Gynol 2 (from Janssen-Cilag) is available through pharmacies or family planning clinics.
