Question

I’m on the Pill. When is the unsafe time in my cycle?

Answer

Once you have started the Pill and are protected and continue to take it correctly, there is no 'unsafe time'.

The hormones in the Pill completely change a woman's cycle from a fertile one where she ovulates once a month (produces an egg from one of her ovaries) to one where no egg is released (no ovulation). This means there is no chance of pregnancy.

You are protected from pregnancy right through your pill packet - in the hormone/active and in the inactive/placebo/sugar pills - so long as you don't miss pills, take medication that stops the Pill working, or get ill with diarrhoea or vomiting.

Have a look at our Fact Sheet for more information on this: http://www.fpnsw.org.au/sex-matters/factsheets/54.html

Remember, male and female condoms are the only contraception methods that protect against STIs (sexually transmissible infections).
