Question

Once you have found out that you are pregnant, when can you arrange an abortion?

Answer

Most women find out that they are pregnant after their period is missed. Pregnancy is measured from the first day of a woman's last period. For example, if a woman's last period started on the 6/11/08, on the 11/12/08 we would say that she was now five weeks pregnant. It is important to know how pregnant a woman is because this influences the choice of termination clinic she can go to.

Abortion can be performed either surgically or with medication.

Medical abortion can be performed from five to seven weeks of pregnancy. Surgical abortion from about six to seven weeks.

Sometimes though, for a range of reasons a woman may not be sure of how pregnant she is. Women can see their local doctor or family planning centre for confirmation of their pregnancy and information about their options. Healthline 1300 65 88 86 can answer some questions and provide contact numbers.
