Family Planning NSW began 80 years ago making it the oldest Family Planning organisation in Australia.

Founded in 1926 by the feminists and activists, Lillie Goodisson and Ruby Rich the aims were the eradication of venereal diseases and to further sex education in the community.

Eighty years later Family Planning still believes these goals are very important. Family Planning NSW focuses on using its expert knowledge in sexual and reproductive health to train other health professionals and provide face to face clinical services in areas of special need.

To celebrate the 80th birthday the Family Planning NSW Foundation is hosting a Gala Fundraising dinner at Sydney University's Women's College to raise funds for the organisation and its rural nursing scholarship.

CEO Ann Brassil says "I am so proud to be part of this celebration. That we have survived 80 years throughout all the politics and funding crises of reproductive health is remarkable. Family Planning has grown into one of the most important organisations for women and their families in Australia. Without it women like me would have had nowhere to go for unbiased, credible contraceptive advice."

President of the Foundation Sophie McCarthy says "Family Planning is part of my family. My mother (Wendy McCarthy) has long been involved and through the Foundation I can help make sure Family Planning will be here for my daughter when she needs advice."

This year Family Planning was a leader in the campaign to restore approval of the drug RU486 to the Therapeutic Goods Administration. Over the last eighty years the organisation has been passionate that women with their partners or families should be able to determine the size and spacing of their families.

'We must never bend' declared its founder Ruby Rich in the 1920s.
