The IUD Theory component is a prerequisite for the clinical component. This can be undertaken as part of the SH&FPA Doctors' course or by distance learning. The clinical component at one of FPNSW Clinics in Ashfield, Fairfield, Newcastle or Dubbo, includes insertion of IUDs under supervision. Assessment will be competency based.
IUD Insertion training is available for doctors with prior experience in Women's Health.
Before commencing this training, Doctors should be experienced in contraceptive counseling, IUD assessments, management of IUD problems, and have well developed bimanual pelvic examination skills.
After completion of the training participants will be able to identify currently available IUDs, their mode of action and associated procedures and will be able to identify and discuss advantages and disadvantages, and indications and contraindications of IUDs.
Following clinical training participants should be able to achieve clinical competence in IUD Insertion.
To successfully complete the clinical training, doctors are required to insert a minimum of 4 IUD's under supervision plus see a variety of IUD problems and participate in IUD counselling. The teaching is on a one-to-one basis and all clinical sessions are directly supervised by Family Planning Instructing Doctors.
