The Sexual Health & Family Planning Australia Certificate in Sexual & Reproductive Health (Doctors' Course) - March 2009

Other dates for 2009 are 17-22 May, 26-31 July and 25-30 October

This course is recognised by the RANZCOG and ACHSHM. It is also recommended by the RACGP for all trainees wishing to increase their knowledge base and clinical skills in sexual and reproductive health. If you are a member of the GPRA, and provide your member number on your application, you will be given a 10% discount. (Please advise if paying by cheque)

* (RACGP 40 Category 1 (Active Learning Module) points have been allocated with a further 40 Category 1 for the optional supervised clinical attachment. ACRRM points will also be allocated. To receive these points you need to supply your member number on your application.

ELIGIBILITY All participants must have at least 1 year's postgraduate experience, have current registration with the NSW Medical Board and belong to a medical defence organisation. Applicants should have an interest in sexual health, contraceptive and reproductive health issues, and preferably have some basic experience in gynaecological examination.

OBJECTIVES The course aims to:

expand knowledge of reproductive health and contraceptive techniques

further develop communication skills in the areas of contraceptive choice, STIs, common gynaecological problems,pregnancy issues and sexuality

develop clinical skills that complement the theoretical aspects of the course

The course has 3 modules, all of which must be completed satisfactorily to gain the Family Planning Australia Certificate. The 3 modules may take up to 4 months to complete.

MODULE 1: GROUP LEARNING (THEORY MODULE)
This 6 day module is designed to provide participants with a sound information base and the opportunity to explore the influences that sexuality issues may have on their clinical practice. Participants will develop communication skills in sexual health care through discussion groups, problem solving exercises, case studies, role plays and other interactive learning methods.

MODULE 2: OSCE EXAMINATION There will be an examination on the final day of the Theory Module, comprising both a written exam and clinical role-plays. If a pass is not attained, an open book examination must be completed to a satisfactory standard.

MODULE 3: CLINICAL TRAINING
Clinical placements provide participants with the opportunity to develop and apply theoretical principles relating to contraceptive technology, gain confidence and expertise in clinical examination and procedures, and further develop communication and brief counselling skills in sexual and preventative health care.

Training in FPNSW clinics with experienced clinical instructors aims to increase confidence in client communication and discussion of approaches to management. Training is competency based, recognises the trainee's established skills and concentrates on areas that require further development.

Clinical placements are arranged after completion of Modules 1 and 2 (in the participant's own time). Rural applicants may complete their clinic placements in the week following Modules 1 and 2, but must contact FPNSW - Medical Education to book these clinical sessions at least 4 weeks prior to the commencement of Module 1. Attendance at a minimum of 7 clinic sessions is required (comprising a sexual health or men's health clinic, an observation clinic at a FPNSW clinic, and 5 participatory sessions at FPNSW clinics), although extra clinical sessions may be needed to demonstrate all competencies required.

COURSE OUTCOMES
Participants will have expanded their knowledge and further developed their communication and clinical skills with gains that can be directly applied to improving their practice in sexual and reproductive health care.
